Why We Give
We give of our resources as an act of worship. It is a concrete way to affirm the truth that everything we are and have belongs to God. It is a declaration of dependence. God has promised to care and provide for us. When we withhold our tithes and offerings we are making a statement that our resources belong to us and that we have to take care of ourselves. Scripture is filled with many pomises of God's provision and saturated with stories of His faithfulness.
How much does He expect us to give? The real question is how much do we keep? But as a guideline, Old Testament believers were required to tithe ten percent of their income. If God required that poor Jewish believer (who had much less than I) to give ten percent, should we begin by giving any less? Jesus promised that not a penny given in HIs name would be lost. The things we give away are what we get to keep for eternity. Jesus encouraged us to invest in heaven, for where our treasure is, that is where our heart will be. Enter wholeheartedly into the joy of giving!
